San Lorenzo Unified has identified Math achievement as their problem of practice for their work as part of the AASSN.
Strengthening foundational skills while maintaining grade-level instruction: We are focusing on closing foundational gaps—particularly in multiplication and division fluency—while ensuring instruction remains aligned to grade-level standards.
Using data cycles to guide instruction: We are implementing regular inquiry cycles, including pre- and post-checks and analysis of tools such as iReady micro-skills, to identify missing skills and monitor student growth.
Increasing student and family engagement: We are expanding efforts to help families understand assessment results and exploring additional supports such as tutoring, after-school and summer programs, and instructional approaches designed to increase student engagement.
Increased academic achievement in mathematics for African American students
We joined the African American Student Success Network (AASSN) to better understand the mathematics disparities we observed following the pandemic. As math scores declined across the state, we used this moment to closely examine mathematics curriculum, instruction, and assessment across our district, with a particular focus on understanding the needs, opportunities, and outcomes for our African American students.
