Increasing the number of Black male students in high school who receive passing grades in core classes.
Building on the personal learning plans launched in 2024–25 for Black male students, we are focusing on the following strategies:
Expanding outreach: We are increasing outreach meetings for Black male students to twice each semester to strengthen connection and support.
Strengthening grading practices: We are providing professional development for high school staff to promote greater consistency in grading practices.
Sustaining celebration and recognition: We are continuing cultural celebration and recognition events to affirm identity and strengthen belonging.
Decrease in D & F grades for Black male students in core classes
Increase in student participation in Teen Summit, Rites of Passage, and other celebration events
Increase in students reporting a feeling of belonging as collected in student survey data
As a long-standing member of the African American Student Success Network (AASSN), we have continued to examine disparities in access and outcomes for our African American students. Beginning in 2023, our team narrowed our focus to Black male students in high school after our data showed they were disproportionately receiving failing grades in core classes.
